About Lyda

Hi Everyone!

Lyda:  Currently I’m a third-year student at two departments; one is the Department of Media and Communication (DMC) which trains students to be professional media people, as u may know, and the other is the Department of English. Two departments? “Wow,” some of my friends always talk about it. Of course, studying at two departments,  as me, or  two universities is not much surprising in Cambodia. Here some students, I’ve known, even have three majors at a time. I have been always doubt about that. Once my lecturer says nowaday, Cambodian youth are so eager to learn as they are now born into a so called “Thristy Society”. I somehow appreciate Cambodian students who are very industrious.

For me, holding two degrees is not dead simple. Sometimes though I work so hard, I still don’t get a satisfied score. That’s why other lecturers of mine keep believing student should be best in one degree rather than good in two or three degrees. I agree. Yet this may be applied only five or ten years  ago. Why so? Job market is shrinking now especially during this global financial crisis. Therefore, people may want to be good at multi skills so that their chances are even more. So do I.

Wanna talk more soon.

Please forgive me for my lateness in responding to ur comment. Hope u don’t mind.
U’re completely right to say I am very hectic these days as there are assignments needed to be completed since semester break is coming soon. But that actually doesn’t stop me very much from communicating and making new friends. Honestly speaking, I am still finding my own right track of life. M not quite sure whether what I want to be in the future. Yet I know traveling and taking photographs are my most favorites. ;-)

    Nice to talk to u!

I’m deeply sorry and I thank very much for ur wonderful comment. U’re right this is my first time in creating my personal blog. Honestly I don’t know much about the blogging though I used to have one course on blogging with my previous lecturer. And u know what the deadline of posting my little vox-pop about “What is typical Cambodian?” is arriving, yet m still figuring out how to post this audio file ;-) .

“Don’t flatter me much,” I tell my friends when talking about me studying two majors at the same time. I am just surviving cos m not really effectively managing my time for these two degrees. Why? Cos many assignments are needed to be completed by this week, but I haven’t even started actually. U know the trend, waiting until the deadline of given assignments comes, is becoming the habit of most students including me.

I also like learning English and guess what also German. I used to study German with my German friends a several months ago. But of course not, I could speak little German like Goten Morgen, Goten Tag, like that. German is amazing but I most of the time find it hard to pronounce the words.

    Thx. Keep in touch.
Nice day. Hope to hear from u soon.

Is it too late if I reply ur comment? Amazing u’re having a degree on teaching profession, but is it that u’re going to be a teacher right? I probably become a teacher as well cos now my school is obliged us to choose a major before going to year 4. U no what I choose BEd, teaching profession. But I choose it because I think it is the only choice while the others are about communication skills which I am touching for 4 years at the Department of Media and Communication. However, before we can become a teacher especially at the university we have to go on another year at Padagogy and that distracts me cos I want to be teacher but dislike spending one more year there.

In Cambodian educational system, there are 12 grades. Grade 1-6 is called Primary school, from 7-9 is called Secondary school and 10-12 is called High school. Students can continue studying at university if they can afford or they get scholarship from the government. Yet students chose to drop out school more in past few years because they could not afford going to school or were needed to help supporting family. To respond to the future goal of the world, Cambodian government is trying to enforce a policy in which students should at least finish grade 9. That’s a really good mission, but I doubt if it is implementable.

Feel free to ask me more. M willing to help if I can.

    Nice to meet.

    hey lyda!
sorry for not replying for such a long time. it’s been totally crazy the past weeks, we had very much to do for uni. and besides that, i also had to work a lot. is it usual in cambodia that students work in their spare time? in germany, a lot of students have to do that which is kind of crappy but you get over it ;) i work in a bar at nights which is actually kind of fun. ok, we have some crazy peolpe sitting there sometimes, but besides that we always have a great time, and most of the people only come to have a beer or to and then leave again.
do students in cambodia move away from home for studying? germans do most of the time, when they start their studies it’s the perfect time to move out, but i heard from my friend in spain that all of the students still live with their parents during their studies. how is it in your country?
i like my own apartement very much, it is not so big, but very comfortable. some students also live in a shared apartement with other students, i’m actually thinking about moving together with a friend of mine, because it is much cheaper than living alone.
hope to hear from you soon, have a great day!

It’s been so late again 2 reply, so sorry. During past two weeks, I was having a hard time, many exams on almost the same day especially last week, I had a difficult time cos I was having final exams at both majors. Anyway, I find Cambodian students a bit different from German students in a way that some of us don’t work during spare time like weekend. However, some do like teaching part time. For me particularly, I find almost no time to work during study, as u may know, i study two departments unlike some of my friends. I wish to hav some time to work so that i gain some experience before graduation.
Of course, I have some friends who rent a flat in Phnom Penh as they are purseing degree here. However, for those who already live in Phnom Penh, it’s unusual for them to live seperately from their parents as me.
I do appreciate u and other who live away from parents. It shows u all are independent and mature enough, right?
    Hope to hear from u.

    Hey Lyda!
you don’t need to apologize for writing so seldom, I think I’m not much better.. with so much stuff going on uni-wise it’s so hard to remember everything so no worries :)
how did your exams go? I hope it all went well. I know the feeling of having more than one exam per day. Totally stupid if you ask me, most of the time I can’t think anymore after one exam, let alone after 2 in a row. I still have my exams ahead of me, but it’s not a lot in this semester because I had a lot of seminars where you only had to make a presentation to pass, and then I have some essays to write during semester break but I like that better than exams.
I know that havin a job is a great way to gain experience, but seriously, sometimes I wish I didn’t HAVE to do it so I had more time to study. Today is a day tho, where I can finally catch up on all the assignments that started piling up the last weeks. So I hope I get done :)
Remember how I told you that I’m planning to move together with a friend? Well, we found a really great apartement and we’re actually signing the contract tomorrow so we’re both really excited. I’ll try and put some pics on my blog as soon as we moved in, it’s a really cute place.
I think movin out is a big step, but a lot of students just had to do it because they had to move to another city to study, but I think most of the students start moving out after they finish high school. Maybe it’s just some kind of tradition, I don’t know.
so did your semester break already start? what are you planning to do in your free time? I have to make an internship in the holidays, but a friend and I are gonna be counselors in a summer camp, and I think it’s gonna be a lot of fun, taking care of the kids and playing games with them, going on night hikes and stuff. I’m really excited :)
so I hope to hear from you soon.
    Take care,
    Hanna
